Mt. Arenal Volcano Area

Mt. Arenal is approximately a four hour drive to/from La Paila. We recommend you extend your stay with an overnight at the Mt. Arenal Lodge or the Arenal Lodge. Both lodges overlook this active volcano and on a clear night the view is spectacular. Pictured: Mount Arenal, an active volcano

The Arenal region offers a full range of hotel accommodations and tour activities.

In Addition

  • The Hanging Bridges Tour near the Arenal Lodge is worth the trip
  • There are many canopy tours in the Arenalarea, as well as wind surfing on Lake Arenal, river rafting, and craft shops in and on the way to/from Fortuna.

Ricon de la Vieja National Park

A two hour drive from the house, past Nicoya off the main road heading toward the Pan American Highway, and well worth the trip, perhaps best planned on your way to or from the villa. Two lodges there are recommended:

Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin
They have the canyon canopy tour, horseback riding, waterfalls, volcanic mud pools and more.

Ricon de la Vieja Lodge
This looks charming. They have hiking, biking, waterfalls, volcanic activity, horseback riding, but most of all they have a canopy tour of 21 platforms in the trees.

Surfing and Wind Surfing

There is good surfing near the house. A popular spot seems to be about an hour north near Nosara, but we’ve seen seen surfers all over the Pacific coast. We would recommend trying to contact surf shops in Samara or Nosara for details.

Lake Arenal, near the volcano – a highly recommended side trip three hours or so drive from the house – has some of the best windsurfing in the world.

A good link for surfing info: www.centralamerica.com/cr/surf/surfmap.htm.
Plus, search on Google, ‘costa rica, surfing’ for many links and info.

Boat/Fishing Trips

Spend a day or just a half day sport fishing with Robert Gordon or other charters out of Carillo. A recent La Paila guest caught a 700+ lb. marlin! Launch just minutes away from the villa at Puerto Carrillo across from the Guanamar Hotel.

Look up Giorgio Carletto and AntonellaBolsieri at the Hotel Giada in Samara, also where the Sansa desk is. They can help arrange boat trips. www.hotelgiada.net; email: htgiada@racsa.co.cr; 506-656-0131
